Local History Collections

Find archives and research collections in local libraries and museums.

Richmond Library

The following two local history collections are for use in the library only and are held in the Research Room at Richmond Library.  To make the most of these collections it is recommended that you contact the Richmond Library in advance and book a librarian to help you get started.

Waimea South Genealogy and History Collection

Archives, unpublished family information, historic photographs, and other items relating to the Waimea South area.

 

The collection is jointly owned by the Tasman Council and The Waimea South Historical Society. Some items from this collection have been digitised and are available on Kete Tasman.

Local History Collection

Books, journals, published family histories and other items from the Nelson Tasman area. Highlights include a Roll of Honour and Directories of local service people who served in the Boer War, World War One and World War Two. Some of these items are also held in the lending collections.

Motueka, Takaka and Murchison Libraries

Each library holds local history and genealogy resources specifically pertaining to their area as well as more general local history books.

Collections in Other Local Organisations

These local organisations have archival collections and other resources of significant value to family historians and researchers.

Nelson Public Libraries - Heritage Collections

Includes the complete run of the Nelson Mail (Nelson Evening Mail) on microfilm, as well as a Māori Heritage Collection containing items of significant heritage or research value relating to local tangata whenua.

Nelson Provincial Museum - Research Facility Collections

An extensive range of local history materials including publications, photographic and archival collections. The collection's strength is in the period 1841-1920.

Golden Bay Museum & Gallery

Collections focus on the history and geology of the Golden Bay / Mohua area. The Museum archives hold information on and photographs of Golden Bay / Mohua families and local industries.

Motueka District Museum Research Room

Family histories, photographs, and scrapbooks on Motueka and surrounding areas including Mapua, Moutere and the Abel Tasman National Park.

Murchison Museum

Collections include photographs and written accounts of the devastating 1929 Murchison Earthquake, as well as early agricultural machinery.
