Friday 12 May 2017

America's prestigious Pulitzer Prize for Fiction has been awarded to Colson Whitehead for his novel The Underground Railroad.

Judges commented that the work was a smart melding of realism and allegory that combines the violence of slavery and the drama of escape in a myth that speaks to contemporary America.

Whitehead adds the Pulitzer win to his earlier National Book Award for The Underground Railroad making this the only novel to complete that particular double since Annie Proulx’s The Shipping News, back in 1994.
