"A landmark title that will stand the test of time .. a book for all ages, a bountiful celebration of Aotearoa New Zealand".

Aotearoa: The New Zealand Story written and illustrated by Gavin Bishop was chosen as the supreme winner of The New Zealand Book Awards for Children & Young Adults 2018.

The judges had a great selection of books to choose from this year, including for the first time e-books and a burgeoning number of self-published titles.

The awards highlight the best New Zealand authors and illustrators in six main categories - young adult fiction, junior fiction, non-fiction, picture book, illustration, and te reo Māori. There is also an award given for best first book.

Other 2018 winners are Ruth Paul for I am Jellyfish (Picture Book Award), Craig Phillips for Giants, Trolls, Witches, Beasts (Russell Clark Illustration Award) and Pauline (Vaeluaga) Smith for My New Zealand Story: Dawn Raid (Best First Book Award).
