2019 Margaret Mahy Book of the Year

Friday 9 August 2019

A "summery, waterlogged, quintessentially New Zealand story" about a child learning to confidently rock out a serious splash has taken out the top award at the New Zealand Book Awards for Children and Young Adults. As well as scooping author Sacha Cotter the coveted Margaret Mahy Book of the Year award, The Bomb also collected the Picture Book Award, to the delight of illustrator Josh Morgan.

The story is built around a young child watching the watery triumphs of those around him, and learning to listen to his inner bomb style. Encouraged by his nan and his community, he learns about his own unique take on the timeless joy of jumping off wharves.

Gorgeously illustrated, The Bomb is great fun for kids and creates a sense of familiarity and joy for happy parents reading along.
