Tuku24 Whakatū Heritage Month is a collection of community-focused events celebrating Nelson Tasman's unique and diverse cultural heritage. Multiple organisations and community groups run their own events with support from Nelson City Council. Below are the events taking place at Richmond and Motueka libraries. Glass Harbours: the miniature marvel of ships-in-bottles |
Featuring selected bottles from The Ricketts Maritime Collection, this exhibition invites visitors to explore the intricate artistry and meticulous detail that goes into encapsulating entire vessels and seafaring scenes within the confines of glass. Glass Harbours showcases a diverse array of ships, offering a captivating glimpse into a rich tapestry of maritime heritage. From the smallest vessels to grandiose sailing fleets, each item on display is testament to the skill and precision of artists who navigate the challenges of scale and confinement to create such miniature marvels. This selection of ships-in-bottles are on loan from the Founders Heritage Park collection. |

Tasman Heritage Slide Show |
Swing by the Constance Barnicoat Room at Richmond Library between 12.00 noon and 1.00pm on 26 March, or 9 April, to view a slide show of photographs and listen to oral histories from the Tasman Heritage website. Photographs include some of the visiting ships, airplanes, motorcycles, and cars in our region during the 1910s and 1920s, as well as significant events, like the Murchison Earthquake, and delightful photos of families, schools, sport and entertainment. Don't miss out on this unique journey through time! |

Paul Deacon Marine Artist Talk “Coasting Northern Europe & Beyond 1970s/80s" |
Paul Deacon, Marine Artist, will speak to a PowerPoint Presentation about his time working on small ships "Coasting Northern Europe & beyond 1970s/80s". These images and commentary will give a unique insight into Paul's years working on coasting ships, the seafaring life, various voyages, cargoes and ports of call. It was a less hurried time before GPS, computers, smartphones and stress. A time spent traversing random sea routes from the Baltic to West Africa & all in-between. |

Wayne Greig Author Talk - “Three Strands of an Unravelling Rope” |
Wayne Greig will be speaking to us about his view of history surrounding the mutiny on the Bounty as covered in his 2016 book “Three Strands of an Unravelling Rope”. In this book Wayne “explores the precursors to the mutiny, the subsequent feat of maritime survival as Bligh guides his men back to safety and the fate of the mutineers on Pitcairn Island, all within the broader social and political milieu of the times.” |

Suter Art Gallery Director Julie Catchpole will be bringing a mystery item from their permanent art collection to Richmond Library for a special show and tell for art lovers. There is so much more to an art work than simply how it looks. When was it made? By whom? For whom? From what? There are so many questions you can ask of an art work before you even get to the subject matter of a piece. Wayne Greig Talk: A Life-Long Adventure in Model Making |
Wayne Greig will be speaking to a PowerPoint Presentation about his life-long adventure with Model Making. He will focus on two areas: the building of his HO scale (1:87) model railway “Wayne’s Trains” currently housed at the Pigeon Valley Steam Museum, Wakefield, and his 1:48 scale model of the merchant ship HMAV Bounty displayed in the Nelson College Library. Wayne is the author of the 2016 book “Three Strands of an Unravelling Rope” Wayne’s view of the history surrounding the mutiny on the Bounty. |

Join local author Kerry Sunderland to hear about her new book ‘Belonging in the Baton Valley’ which grew out of the feature article she wrote for ‘New Zealand Geographic’ in late 2022, after the newest section of Tasman’s Great Taste Trail opened.
